On the Saturday before Palm Sunday, i.e., St. Lazarus Day, children sing Lazarus carols, walking from door to door, and collect money and eggs for the priests. In the past, no farmer went to work on their fields on that day, as this would result in nothing growing there. The only task allowed was to gather dry branches and wood for the ovens that would bake Easter cookies during the Holy week. On St. Lazarus’ Day, housewives at every home make twisted dough cookies called Lazarakia, which symbolise the body of Lazarus wrapped in the shroud.
